Why is it that no one can name more than 10 African countries (Chris is in Europe ... he can't help us out!).

We discussed some stereotypes associated with Africa ... the continent ... not country! (yikes!)

And you began your Map of Africa assignment (click here for Map Evaluation). C'mon ... you have to know where the places we talk about are located!!!

Day Twenty-Three

Today's topic: Slum Tourism, or 'Poorism'

If you were absent for today's class, please be sure to get the notes from your classmates. Important themes include: what is a slum? the three most famous slums in the world (Kibera, Kenya; the favelas of Rio, Brazil; and Dharavi, India), and the ethics of slum travel.

Unfortunately we don't have time to watch the film Slumdog Millionaire, but I do recommend it for your free time. We watched a 5-minute segment to introduce ourselves to Dharavi, Mumbai.

There was a reading on slum tourism presented, and students are required to write a FORMAL paragraph on their feelings about this topic. Please click here to access the reading.

Day Twenty-One & Twenty-Two

For the next two days we are going to talk about 'safety on the road': ways we can keep our wits about ourselves while travelling.

Each year, many (Canadian) travellers find themselves in trouble with the law. What situations do we need to be aware off? We discuss issues concerning drugs in SouthEast Asia.

Here is an essential link to a Canadian government website concerning travel safety (important to look at both before and during travel):

Always keep the contact information (website, phone, and fax) for the Canadian high commission/embassy for the country(ies) you are visiting.
